owning-my-truth:

When did people ever make jokes about Columbine or any other time when white lives are in jeopardy? A big “Fuck you” to all of you that find Ebola that’s killing Africans to be “funny” and a convenient punch line in your sordid lives

People making jokes about Ebola (myself included) aren’t making the jokes because the victims are African, we’re making jokes to lighten the mood of a terrible issue that could be affecting us soon. People make jokes about Columbine too. Get off your high horse and stop thinking you’re better than everyone just because you can’t take a joke.

This is how white people operate. I can stand here as a Nigerian-American and tell a white person that I literally have family members working as doctors in a Nigerian city that has had a documented case of ebola, and where my younger relatives had the start of their school years pushed back by a whole month due to ebola, and where people are literally living in fear and you can sit here and say “get off your high horse” and that I should know how to “take a joke.” The senseless cruelty of white people will never cease to surprise me at times, but I know why they do it.

They do this because black life means nothing to them. Black pain and humanity are abstractions that they simply cannot grasp. The only way they can relate to us is from a point of dehumanization and domination, and there is no middle ground. They go about telling lies that tragedies affecting mostly white people (e.g. Columbine, Newtown, Aurora shooting) etc. aren’t given special weight in our racist society and that by and large any “joke” someone would make about these events would be seen as tasteless at minimum, and as if most times when this happens the people (rightly) get vehemently called out.

Black tragedies and the brutalization of black life in this country on the other hand are sources of amusement before the white gaze. After the Zimmerman verdict, the white neighbors of one of my black friends shot off fireworks in a show of their cruel disregard for black suffering and pain. It was all funny and a source of celebration for them.

And remember this from Halloween last year?

Similarly when Mike Brown was lynched by police in front of his community in broad daylight, his body was left in the sun for hours. His dead body was a spectacle and a form of dehumanizing amusement for the white officers before being bundled off in an unmarked black van in an act of terrorism and psychological warfare against the community. Effectively they were saying with a wicked smile to the devastated members of his community, “Step out of line and you’ll be next *chuckle*”

This is how lynching operated historically as well. White people would gleefully gather to watch the execution and brutalization of black bodies, even posing with these bodies in pictures after the fact and ripping off body parts to take home as souvenirs and gifts for their loved ones.

Lynching a perfect time for a date too (as we zoom in a bit closer on this picture) to the young white couple holding hands:

And so it goes in Africa too where the mutilation of black bodies was a form of entertainment for the white gaze as well:

Today this addiction to images of black African suffering emerges in the poverty pornography exported as yet another form of spectacle by Western international “development” organizations as part of the white savior industrial complex. And if its not that dehumanizing image of black Africans that is created as a form of titillating pornography for the white gaze, it is “jokes” about Ebola, Africa and other forms of suffering we endure.

So spare me with your obtuse, racist ahistorical bullshit, white boy. You may delight in black suffering, the pain and fears of my own family members in cities literally being affected by ebola as we speak but I’m not going to stand for it.
